Arc Ultra is easy to place badly and rewarding to place well. Its upward-firing drivers need a sensible relationship to the ceiling. The soundbar should not be trapped in a deep cabinet or mounted where the television blocks its acoustic path. The HDMI chain must pass the right audio format. The network must be dependable. Those details determine whether the result feels enveloping or merely louder than the television.

Davis Audio & Video treats Arc Ultra as part of the room. We coordinate mounting height, screen location, furniture, ceiling geometry, Sub placement, surround options and control behavior. The objective is not to expose every setting; it is to make “watch TV” reliable and speech easy to understand.

Arc Ultra is also a natural fit for homes already using Sonos. Television audio can remain local while music joins other rooms, and a compatible automation system can place the most useful functions on the same remote used for lighting and room control.

Sonos uses 15 Class-D amplifiers, nine silk-dome tweeters—including two upward-firing units—six midwoofers, and its Sound Motion woofer architecture. The result is engineered to create a large spatial presentation from one bar.

Dialogue that can be adjusted to the listener

Four Speech Enhancement levels allow the system to move from subtle assistance to stronger voice emphasis. We set the default with the room and listener in mind rather than leaving every client to troubleshoot dialogue scene by scene.

Room tuning on both major mobile platforms

Arc Ultra supports Trueplay tuning with compatible iOS and Android devices. The procedure measures the room and adjusts the soundbar; final listening still includes checking seating positions, bass integration and preferred content.

Installation details that determine performance

Dolby Atmos is a chain, not a checkbox. The streaming app or disc must provide a compatible mix; the source device must output it; the television must pass it; and the soundbar must receive it through the correct HDMI connection. Arc Ultra supports Dolby Atmos over Dolby Digital Plus and, through eARC, Dolby Atmos carried by Dolby TrueHD, along with multichannel PCM. We verify the format at the Sonos app instead of assuming the logo on the TV guarantees the result.

Physical placement is equally important. Sonos lists Arc Ultra at 46.38 inches wide, so screen and furniture proportions should be reviewed. Wall mounts need the correct structure and clearance. On furniture, the bar should sit forward enough that the cabinet does not obstruct the drivers. Ceiling height, slope and absorption influence the perceived height effect.

We also commission the control path. HDMI-CEC, TV remote volume, source wake behavior and the room-off sequence are tested together. A powerful soundbar is not a successful system if the family still reaches for three remotes.

How Arc Ultra works with the rest of the home

Samsung televisions

Arc Ultra connects through the TV’s HDMI eARC/ARC port. We verify the correct port, digital-audio output, CEC control, pass-through behavior and mounting clearances.

Sonos Sub and surrounds

Compatible Sonos products can add deeper bass and discrete surround channels. Placement is selected for response and comfort, not merely the nearest outlet.

Control4 remote control

A Control4 Halo Touch can launch the viewing activity, select sources, set volume and coordinate lights or shades while Sonos remains the audio platform.

Whole-home Sonos

Music can be grouped with other Sonos rooms. Television audio grouping is possible, but network conditions and latency expectations should be discussed before it becomes a design requirement.

Arc Ultra planning checklist

  • Identify the television model, source devices and apps before promising a specific Atmos path. ARC can carry some Atmos formats; lossless Atmos via TrueHD requires eARC.
  • Do not bury the bar in millwork or allow the screen edge to block it. Review wall-mount spacing and the upward-firing path to the ceiling.
  • Sub placement, floor construction and neighboring spaces can affect both impact and comfort. Wiring and power should be planned even when the Sub is a later phase.
  • Volume, mute, power, source switching and recovery after an app update or power event should be tested from the primary remote—not just from an installer phone.

Does Sonos Arc Ultra support Dolby Atmos?

Yes. Arc Ultra supports Dolby Atmos delivered through Dolby Digital Plus and, with an eARC connection, Dolby Atmos carried by Dolby TrueHD. The television, source device, app or disc and HDMI settings must all support the desired format.

Do I need HDMI eARC for Arc Ultra?

Not for every use. HDMI ARC can carry stereo, Dolby Digital and Atmos in Dolby Digital Plus from compatible sources. eARC is required for higher-bandwidth formats such as Dolby Atmos in Dolby TrueHD and multichannel PCM.

Can Sonos Arc Ultra be wall-mounted?

Yes. Wall mounting is a common installation. The bracket, wall structure, screen relationship, cable routing and acoustic clearance should be planned together so the television does not block the bar and the upward-firing drivers have a useful path.

Will Arc Ultra work with a Samsung TV?

Yes, when the Samsung television provides a compatible HDMI ARC or eARC connection. We verify the exact model, port, CEC setting, digital-audio output and pass-through behavior because menu names and capabilities vary by model and year.

Does Arc Ultra need a Sonos Sub?

No. Arc Ultra includes Sonos Sound Motion low-frequency technology and can operate on its own. A compatible Sonos Sub adds deeper bass and greater headroom, which is valuable in larger rooms or for more cinematic impact.

Can I add rear surround speakers later?

Yes. Compatible Sonos speakers can be bonded as surrounds. We plan outlet locations and placement before the room is finished when possible, even if the surrounds are a later phase.

Can Arc Ultra be controlled by a Control4 remote?

Yes, Arc Ultra can be part of a professionally programmed Control4 television activity. The remote can handle source selection, volume and room scenes while the Sonos app remains available for detailed music browsing and settings.

Does Arc Ultra support Bluetooth?

Yes. Arc Ultra includes Bluetooth 5.3 for supported playback. Television audio still uses HDMI eARC/ARC; Bluetooth is not the preferred path for the primary TV connection.

Is Arc Ultra compatible with every older television?

No. A television needs a supported audio output and compatible behavior. Sonos specifically notes that some older CCFL-backlit televisions from roughly 2004–2012 are not compatible. We verify the model before designing around an existing screen.
