Native tunable-white light for retrofit and remodel applications

Lutron Lumaris Tunable White Downlights

Lutron Lumaris downlights combine warm-dim behavior and adjustable white light in a native HomeWorks QSX or RadioRA 3 fixture. Integrator guidance

Lutron Lumaris Downlights in a complete system designed by Davis Audio & Video.

Living room illuminated in a cool color scene controlled from a mobile device

Lumaris is Lutron's approachable intelligent-lighting family. Instead of controlling a conventional fixed-white lamp through a wall dimmer, each downlight contains a two-channel light engine and native wireless control. Brightness and white-light temperature can change together for warm dimming or be adjusted within the available range for tasks, finishes and preferred room atmosphere.

The two installation paths solve different conditions. Retrofit models connect inside approved existing recessed housings, while canless remodeler models include an IC-rated assembly and junction box for openings cut into finished ceilings. Housing size, opening, ceiling construction, insulation, line voltage, RF placement and finish must match the selected system-specific model.

Davis Audio & Video treats the fixture as part of a lighting plan rather than a gadget. We review beam coverage, room surfaces, placement, circuiting and scenes, then coordinate electrical installation and Lutron programming. The result can move naturally from brighter task light to a warm low-level evening scene without adding a separate color-control interface.

Where Lumaris downlights fit best

Lumaris downlights are useful when native Lutron tunable-white control and practical residential installation are higher priorities than extensive optical customization.

Existing recessed housings

Retrofit models can replace compatible lamps and trims in existing 4-inch, 5-inch or 6-inch housings after condition, depth and mounting are verified.

Finished-ceiling remodels

Canless models support planned openings where new housings are impractical, subject to cutout dimensions, wiring access, insulation and ceiling conditions.

Kitchens and everyday living spaces

An 800-lumen general-lighting output can support layered residential plans when quantity, spacing and other task or decorative sources are designed together.

Home theaters and entertaining areas

Native 0.1 percent dimming and scene control can provide low-level transitions without treating the downlights as separate smart bulbs.

HomeWorks or RadioRA 3 upgrades

System-specific Lumaris models can extend an existing compatible platform after processor capacity, Type X coverage and current software support are confirmed.

What Lumaris downlights add

Warm dim and tunable white

The same two-channel engine supports familiar warmer light at low levels and adjustable white light from 1,800K to 4,000K.

Deep native dimming

Lutron specifies flicker-free control from 0.1 percent to full output when the fixture is installed and programmed within its native system.

Consistent color rendering

The current product pages specify CRI greater than 90 across the available white-light range.

No control wire to each fixture

Clear Connect Type X provides native wireless control, although each fixture still needs correct line-voltage power and compliant RF placement.

Retrofit and canless choices

The shared performance platform can address both reusable recessed cans and finished-ceiling openings with white or black trim options.

Professional design

Why fixture and RF selection must be coordinated

The public product page presents generic RD and CD configurations, while installation documents identify HomeWorks, RadioRA 3 and commercial model prefixes plus 4-inch and 5-inch or 6-inch mounting versions. Davis Audio & Video confirms the control platform, housing or cutout, finish and exact current order number before procurement. A generic Lumaris label is not sufficient for an accurate bill of materials.

Lumaris downlights are native system devices, not conventional lamps for a phase-cut dimmer. Lutron instructs installers not to place them on a dimmer or ordinary switched control and requires Lutron Designer setup by a trained professional. Each fixture also participates in the Type X RF network, so adjacent-device spacing, metal obstructions and separation from wireless interference influence placement as well as the lighting layout.

Lumaris downlight integration within a Davis Audio & Video system

HomeWorks QSX

HomeWorks can coordinate Lumaris intensity and color temperature with keypads, schedules, automated shades and broader whole-home scenes.

RadioRA 3

RadioRA 3 treats compatible Lumaris fixtures as Clear Connect Type X devices within its processor and mesh-placement limits.

Control4 and integrated home scenes

A supported Lutron integration can recall approved HomeWorks or RadioRA 3 scenes while Lutron retains control of the native fixture behavior.

Automated shades and daylight

Compatible Lutron shades can join scenes so electric-light levels and natural-light control respond together rather than as isolated systems.

Planning notes

Lumaris downlight design considerations

  • Measure the existing can or planned opening, housing depth, ceiling thickness, insulation and mounting condition before selecting a model.
  • Coordinate spacing, room geometry, surfaces and other decorative or task lighting around the published 800-lumen general-lighting output.
  • Do not place Lumaris downlights on a conventional dimmer. Coordinate line-voltage wiring and service access with a qualified electrician.
  • Place fixtures within the assigned processor architecture and near compatible Type X devices while avoiding metal and listed interference sources.
  • Set intensity and color-temperature behavior around real tasks, interior finishes and personal preferences, with scenes that feel natural throughout the day.

FAQs

Product questions

What are Lutron Lumaris downlights?

Lumaris downlights are native Lutron two-channel tunable-white fixtures for HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3. They provide 800 lumens, 1,800K to 4,000K white light and system dimming from 0.1 percent to full output.

What is the difference between retrofit and remodeler Lumaris downlights?

Retrofit models mount in compatible existing recessed housings and use an E26 adapter. Remodeler models are canless IC-rated assemblies for correctly sized openings in finished ceilings and include their own junction-box arrangement.

Can Lumaris downlights use an existing wall dimmer?

No. Lutron's installation guide says the fixture will not operate properly when connected to a dimmer. It requires correct line-voltage power and native control through a compatible Lutron system.

Do Lumaris downlights require HomeWorks or RadioRA 3?

The current residential models are designed for HomeWorks QSX or RadioRA 3, with system-specific model prefixes and professional Lutron Designer setup. The selected fixture must match the project's control platform.

How warm and cool can Lumaris downlights become?

Lutron specifies a tunable-white range from 1,800K to 4,000K. The system can support warm-dim behavior and programmed color-temperature settings within that published range.

How low do Lumaris downlights dim?

Lutron specifies flicker-free dimming from 0.1 percent to 100 percent through the native control system. Davis Audio & Video verifies installed low-end behavior and scene transitions during commissioning.

Are Lumaris downlights suitable for bathrooms?

Current installation guides permit selected Lumaris configurations in covered-ceiling wet locations. Davis Audio & Video verifies the exact model, trim, ceiling condition and electrical and building-code requirements.

Are Lumaris downlights available in black?

Lutron currently documents white and black trim finishes. Availability and the exact HomeWorks or RadioRA 3 model should be confirmed for the selected size and installation type before ordering.
