Integrator guidance

Ketra Downlights in a complete system designed by Davis Audio & Video.

Open-plan living room illuminated by Ketra downlights and architectural lighting

D2 is a two-inch family with new-construction or remodeler housings and fixed, adjustable or wall-wash versions. D3 is a three-inch new-construction family. D4R is a fixed four-inch remodeler using an S30 lamp; S30 retrofit trim offers another compatible four-inch path.

Fixed downlights point downward, adjustable fixtures aim at a target, and wall washers illuminate vertical surfaces. Aperture, beam, trim, ceiling thickness, framing and insulation determine fit.

Ketra publishes 1,400K to 10,000K white light, 16.7 million colors and 0.1% dimming. Vibrancy changes material rendering without changing CCT or intensity; Color Lock corrects output over time.

Where Ketra downlights are the right fit

Ketra is strongest where the quality, direction and behavior of light are important enough to coordinate with the architecture and the control system from the beginning.

High-craft new construction

D2 and D3 new-construction housings coordinate with framing, drywall, millwork and ceiling plans before close-in. Fixed, adjustable and wall-wash roles are selected by location.

Finished-ceiling renovations

D2 Remodeler brings a two-inch aperture through a finished ceiling; D4R provides a four-inch fixed retrofit path. Davis Audio & Video verifies cavity depth, insulation, obstructions and access.

Art, material and architectural emphasis

Adjustable and wall-wash configurations reveal texture, artwork and vertical surfaces. Beam, aiming distance, glare control and finish are designed together.

Rooms that change throughout the day

HomeWorks can call presets for morning, task work, entertaining, viewing and evening. Keypad scenes keep daily operation simple.

What a properly designed Ketra downlight system does better

Matches the fixture to construction

Each location specifies construction type, aperture, trim, optic, rating and ceiling condition, preventing installation conflicts.

Uses optical choices intentionally

Spot, flood and wide-flood optics are chosen around throw, target size and spacing. Adjustable fixtures are aimed to the finished room.

Maintains a consistent visual language

Downlights, lamps and compatible linear products can share scenes. Color Lock is designed to preserve close color consistency over rated life.

Allows addressable zoning

Clear Connect Type X gives each source a digital identity, so zones and scenes can be refined in software. Continuous line power and reliable wireless layout remain essential.

Professional design

Why professional Ketra downlight design matters

Recessed lights compete with joists, ducts, plumbing, sprinklers, speakers and shade pockets. Davis Audio & Video coordinates fixture centers, housing dimensions, beam intent and access before rough-in; the housing above a small aperture still needs room.

D2 New Construction mounts before drywall and is IC-rated; D2 Remodeler enters through a finished ceiling and is non-IC-rated. Wet-location suitability depends on the exact trim lens, SKU, ceiling area and code.

Residential Ketra requires HomeWorks QSX and compatible Clear Connect Type X infrastructure. Current designs can use an HQP7-RF-2 dual-radio HomeWorks wireless processor or an HQP7-RF Type X gateway paired with a QSX processor. Radio placement, PoE, Ethernet, device spacing and continuous power are designed with the lighting layout.

How Ketra downlights fit into a Davis Audio & Video system

With HomeWorks QSX

HomeWorks provides residential processing and programming. Lutron's current comparison places Ketra under HomeWorks, not RadioRA 3.

With Lutron keypads and shades

A keypad can set downlights and compatible shades to a named scene while preserving raise, lower and manual adjustment.

With Control4 automation

A supported integration can call selected HomeWorks scenes from entertainment or whole-home routines while Lutron retains detailed lighting control.

With a managed network

The selected Type X radio device—an HQP7-RF-2 processor or HQP7-RF gateway—needs PoE Ethernet, suitable placement and a documented switch port and service path.

Planning notes

Ketra downlight project planning

  • Lighting centers are reviewed with framing, HVAC, sprinklers, speakers, shades and millwork before rough-in. Visual alignment is balanced with the beam's actual target.
  • New-construction and remodeler housings solve different conditions. Insulation, cavity depth, ceiling access and finish schedule determine which path is appropriate.
  • Ceiling height, fixture spacing, aiming distance, art dimensions and glare exposure guide fixed, adjustable, wall-wash and beam-angle decisions.
  • Assigned processor or gateway and device spacing are checked on each floor. Metal, 2.4 GHz interference and unpowered gaps are addressed before installation.

FAQs

Product questions

What is the difference between Ketra D2, D3 and D4R downlights?

D2 is a two-inch family offered in new-construction and remodeler housings. D3 is a three-inch new-construction family. D4R is a fixed four-inch remodeler that integrates an S30 lamp. Output, housing, trim and installation conditions differ.

What is the difference between D2 New Construction and D2 Remodeler?

D2 New Construction mounts before drywall and is IC-rated. D2 Remodeler installs through a finished ceiling and is non-IC-rated. Insulation, depth, cutout and ceiling thickness must be verified.

Are Ketra downlights fixed or adjustable?

D2 and D3 families include fixed, adjustable and wall-wash configurations. D4R is a fixed downlight with adjustable regress. The correct distribution depends on what the fixture needs to illuminate.

How warm or cool can Ketra downlights appear?

Current pages specify 1,400K-10,000K. CRI 90+ is published from 2,700K-5,000K and should not be extended to the entire CCT range.

How low do Ketra downlights dim?

Current specifications list 0.1%-100% dimming through the compatible Lutron system. Perceived results also depend on surfaces and surrounding light.

Do residential Ketra downlights work with RadioRA 3?

No current residential support is listed. Lutron places Ketra under HomeWorks, not RadioRA 3, so Davis Audio & Video uses HomeWorks QSX and Type X.

Can Ketra downlights use a normal wall dimmer?

No. Ketra sources are intelligent Type X devices that require continuous line power and compatible Lutron control. A conventional dimmer can interrupt power and compromise operation and mesh reliability.

Can Ketra downlights be used in a bathroom?

Selected configurations support damp locations, and D2 Remodeler lists wet-location availability with the proper trim lens. Exact SKU, area and code requirements must be verified.

What do Ketra Color Lock and Vibrancy do?

Color Lock monitors output and corrects the light source to preserve close color consistency over time. Vibrancy changes the spectral recipe of white light to alter how materials render without changing the selected CCT or intensity.
