Managed residential network infrastructure
The Araknis 520-Series router is built for professionally managed residential networks, with multi-gigabit interfaces, dual-WAN options, VLAN support, VPN services and OvrC remote management. Its purpose is not to be a decorative all-in-one Wi-Fi box. It is the routing and security core around which switches, wireless access points and connected systems are organized.
Integrator guidance
Modern homes place very different demands on one network. A video call needs low latency. A 4K streaming system needs sustained throughput. Automation processors, thermostats and lighting bridges need predictable addressing. Cameras create continuous traffic. Guests need internet access without access to the home’s private devices. The router is where those policies begin.
Davis Audio & Video approaches networking as part of the automation system. We estimate device count and traffic, map wired and wireless coverage, separate appropriate device classes with VLANs, coordinate ISP handoff, and provide remote-management visibility. The goal is not maximum complexity; it is a network that quietly supports the experiences the homeowner paid for.
The 520-Series is especially relevant when internet service and local infrastructure have moved beyond one-gigabit bottlenecks. Its 2.5 Gb WAN and LAN interfaces allow a multi-gig handoff into a suitable switch, while a separate 1 Gb RJ45/SFP combination interface supports additional WAN or LAN design options.
When the Araknis 520-Series makes sense

A 2.5 Gb WAN interface can accept service above one gigabit, while the 2.5 Gb LAN interface can feed a compatible core switch without immediately reducing the path to 1 Gb.
Use the router with managed switches and properly placed access points so routing, power, wired capacity and RF coverage can be scaled independently.
OvrC visibility allows an integrator to monitor supported devices, review status and perform certain recovery or configuration tasks without treating every incident as an immediate site visit.
Dual-WAN failover and load-balancing features can support a secondary provider where the project’s reliability requirements justify the added service and equipment.
What a managed router contributes
The 520 data sheet lists a 2.5 Gb WAN, a 2.5 Gb LAN and firewall throughput up to 4,400 Mbps. Real internet performance still depends on the service, modem or ONT, configuration, traffic mix and downstream devices.
IEEE 802.1Q VLAN support allows appropriately configured switches and access points to separate trusted, guest, IoT, camera or other traffic while using one coordinated infrastructure.
OvrC and OvrC Pro integration can expose network and supported-device information to the service provider. That can shorten diagnosis, but it should be accompanied by a defined support policy and secure account practices.
The fanless 1U chassis supports rack installation without adding fan noise. Firewall, access-control, VPN and dual-WAN features make the router suitable for residential systems that need more policy than a consumer gateway normally provides.
Professional design
The Araknis 520 does not include Wi-Fi radios. Wireless coverage comes from separate access points connected through the switching infrastructure. This is an advantage in a custom home because access points can be placed for signal quality, channel reuse and roaming rather than wherever the internet cable enters the building.
Multi-gigabit performance also requires an end-to-end path. The ISP equipment, router, switch uplinks, copper or fiber, access points and client devices must all support the intended rate. A 2.5 Gb router cannot make a 1 Gb switch port or a weak wireless client run faster. We document expected bottlenecks rather than using the fastest number on one box as a system promise.
Security comes from configuration and maintenance. Stateful inspection, DoS protections, access-control lists and network address translation provide tools, but good results also require current firmware, strong administrative credentials, limited remote exposure, appropriate VLAN policy and an inventory of connected devices.
How the Araknis router supports a Davis Audio & Video system
A stable IP foundation supports processors, touchscreens, remotes, lighting gateways, streaming services and app access. Device reservations and network boundaries are documented for service.
Wired rack endpoints and well-planned wireless coverage reduce discovery and playback problems. Multicast and segmentation decisions are tested with the actual audio platform.
Streaming displays, matrix endpoints and control interfaces receive the bandwidth and addressing policy intended for their role, rather than all devices competing on an unmanaged flat network.
Traffic can be separated and prioritized by design. VPN capability can support approved remote-access use cases without exposing internal services directly to the public internet.

We match the product to the room, speaker load, network, display, control platform, wiring path, and aesthetic requirements. The goal is a complete operating system—not a collection of unrelated boxes.
Mounting, wiring, rack placement, ventilation, labeling, surge protection, and network connections are completed with serviceability in mind. Concealed work is documented whenever practical.
We configure the everyday experience, verify signal paths, tune audio or picture settings, test control from the primary interfaces, and check the edge cases that usually create support calls later.
We explain the few controls that matter, leave the system in a predictable state, and provide a support path. Davis Audio & Video’s standard is simple: if the system is difficult to use, the project is not finished.
FAQs
It is a router, but it does not contain Wi-Fi radios. A complete wireless network uses separate access points connected through appropriate switching. Separating those roles allows access points to be placed where the signal is needed.
They allow compatible links to carry more than the one-gigabit ceiling of standard Gigabit Ethernet. To benefit, the ISP handoff or local traffic path, switch ports, cabling and endpoint also need to support the higher rate.
OvrC is a remote-management platform used with supported professional networking, power and connected products. It can provide device visibility and service tools to the integrator. Access should be protected and governed by the project’s support agreement.
The platform supports dual-WAN failover and load-balancing features. A successful design still requires compatible modem or ONT connections, two active services, routing policy and testing of how sessions behave when a circuit changes.
Yes, it supports IEEE 802.1Q VLANs. VLANs also have to be configured on the managed switches and wireless access points, with firewall rules that allow the intended automation and media discovery traffic.
Not by itself. Wi-Fi speed and coverage depend on the access points, their wired uplinks, channel plan, construction materials, interference and client devices. The router can remove certain routing bottlenecks, but it is not the radio layer.
Often the ISP device can be placed in bridge, passthrough or an equivalent mode so the Araknis unit performs routing. Available modes vary by provider and gateway. Double NAT should be avoided unless there is a deliberate reason for it.
The manufacturer data sheet lists IPsec, PPTP and OpenVPN capabilities with model-specific throughput and tunnel limits. The selected protocol should reflect current security policy and the remote-access use case; legacy protocols should not be chosen merely because they are available.
It provides more policy and visibility tools, but security depends on configuration, firmware maintenance, credential protection, remote-access choices and monitoring. Professional hardware does not eliminate the need for disciplined administration.
Review it after major ISP, automation, camera or AV changes and periodically for firmware, device inventory, account access, coverage and capacity. A documented network makes those reviews much more efficient.
